Poem THE LITTLE RED BOOK

It’s that time of the year; they are everywhere,
Red books that hold your future on their pages,
I’m keeping my pride; I’ll take that dare,
I’m not believing any wise old sages.

I see a few being sold at the market place,
I barely look at them, I bravely walk away,
Then daughter breezily saunters by; she stays,
Out of her purse, five-ringgit she has to pay.

A grin lighting up her face? I wonder why?
“Is your sheep good for you this year?” I query
“Ma, a five star romance for you,” is her reply,
Forgive me, pride, I had to take a peek and see.

True enough, my animal proudly raises its hood
Ten red stars for love and health and five to prosper,
How clever and wise you are, you great little book,
I need have nothing to fear throughout the year.

You’ll be earning much, it said, money is in,
loving is great and your health is good,
But don’t spend much or you’ll have nothin’
And to keep well, don’t you get angry; or brood.

Its tongue in cheek advice, I’ll keep, as I travel along,
Facing unforeseen circumstances the year through,
I’ll pass the day with a rhyme and a song,
And a prayer that all wishes will come true.
